Inflammation resolution by phagocytosis
Phagocytosis can lead to inflammation initiation, augmentation or its resolution, depending on the target being ingested and the local environmental conditions in which the phagocytosis is taking place. An oft overlooked component of phagocytosis is inflammation resolution through the removal of apoptotic cells. Not only does this preclude pro-inflammatory secondary necrosis of effete, apoptotic cells but also manifests an active cytokine profile modulation from pro-inflammatory to anti-inflammatory secretion. We are investigating modulation of phagocytosis undertaken by human monocyte-derived macrophages and airway epithelial cells through exposure to nutraceuticals and hydrogen sulfide.
